Builders and carpenters overlap a lot, and plenty of builders started as carpenters. The difference shows up in licensing and in who runs the other trades.
For a single trade job like a feature wall, shelving or a small repair, a carpenter is often all you need. For work involving several trades, structural changes or a contract value over the QBCC threshold, you need a QBCC licensed builder who can take responsibility for the whole job.
When a carpenter is enough
- Feature walls, shelving and built-ins.
- Small repairs to doors, frames or trims.
- Single trade work under the QBCC licence threshold.
When you need a builder
- Kitchens, bathrooms and whole home renovations.
- Decks, pergolas and roofed outdoor areas.
- Any job needing plumbers, electricians, tilers and carpenters to work in order.
- Work that needs approvals or engineering.
Why licensing matters
In Queensland, building work over the QBCC threshold must be done by an appropriately licensed contractor, and you can check any licence on the QBCC website. Orange Projects holds QBCC licence 15620733. Read what to check before hiring a builder and handyman vs licensed builder.
We cover both sides: carpentry for smaller jobs and full building and renovation work.
