Overview

A gate that drags on the path or will not latch is almost never a gate problem. It is a post problem. Timber posts on the Gold Coast fail at the point where they meet the soil or concrete, and once a post leans a few degrees the gate stops closing even though the gate itself is fine. So the first thing we check is the post: is it sound below ground, is the concrete footing intact, and has it moved. Then the hinge line, then the frame. A gate that has racked out of square needs the frame braced or rebuilt, not packed with extra hinges. Pool gates are their own category. In Queensland a pool gate must self-close and self-latch from any open position, and a gate that has dropped or lost spring tension is a compliance issue as well as an inconvenience.

Why Gold Coast gates sag

The common failure sequence is simple. A timber post sits in sand-heavy or reactive soil, gets wet through every summer storm season, and softens right at ground level where oxygen and moisture meet. The post loses its grip, the gate's weight levers it forward, and the leading edge drops onto the path. The second cause is hardware. Standard zinc hinges within a few streets of the beach corrode fast, and once the screws rust in the post the hinge plate works loose under normal use. Upgrading to stainless or hot dip galvanised hardware costs very little at the time of the repair and prevents the same call again in two years.
