Overview

Outdoor stairs take a beating on the Gold Coast. Sun, rain and humidity work on the timber, and a stair that was fine ten years ago can end up with soft treads, loose stringers and a handrail that moves when you lean on it. We build new outdoor stairs and replace old ones: stairs off decks and verandahs, external access stairs to upper levels, garden steps between terraces and steps set into retaining walls. As carpenters, we set out the rise and going so the stair is comfortable to use and detail the timber to shed water. Construction requirements for stairs vary depending on the design, height and application. Handrails, balustrades, landings and rise and going dimensions are governed by building rules that depend on the height of the stair and what it serves. We design each stair to suit and advise where certification applies.

Timber outdoor stairs

Hardwood and treated pine remain the go-to for outdoor stairs. We size stringers to the span, fix treads so they drain and do not cup, and keep end grain off the ground. Composite treads are an option on some designs for lower maintenance.

Garden steps

Sleeper steps, timber-edged steps with gravel or paver treads and steps set into slopes connect the levels of a yard. They are often built with retaining walls and paving.

External access stairs

Stairs to upper levels, highset homes and granny flats need proper footings, stringers and landings, plus handrails and balustrades to suit the height. These are more likely to require certification.

Stair replacements

When stringers are rotted at the base or treads are soft, replacement is usually safer and better value than patching. We remove the old stair and build the new one to current requirements.

Landings, handrails and balustrades

Longer or higher stairs may need intermediate landings, and handrails and balustrades are required at certain heights. We design these in from the start so the stair is safe and compliant for its use.

It depends on the height, design and what the stair serves. Higher stairs and stairs that are part of a building's access are more likely to need certification. We advise on your stair specifically.

When do stairs need handrails or balustrades?

Requirements depend on the height of the stair and the drop at the side. We design handrails and balustrades to suit your stair's height and use.

Can you repair rather than replace my stairs?

If the stringers and footings are sound, replacing treads or a handrail can be enough. If stringers are rotted, replacement is safer.

What timber do you use for outdoor stairs?

Durable hardwoods or treated pine rated for outdoor exposure, with fixings suited to the conditions. Composite treads are an option on some designs.
