Do You Need Underlay for Hybrid Flooring? Gold Coast Guide

Hybrid flooring being installed in a Gold Coast home

Underlay is one of the most asked questions about hybrid floors. The right answer depends on the board, the subfloor and whether you live in a house or a unit.

Short answer

Most hybrid boards have an acoustic underlay attached, so you usually don't add a second soft layer. On concrete slabs, a moisture barrier is often needed. Units on the Gold Coast may also have body corporate acoustic rules. Always follow the board maker's instructions or the warranty can be void.

Attached vs separate underlay

Adding a thick foam underlay under boards that already have one makes the floor bouncy and can break the locking joints.

Moisture barriers

Concrete slabs hold moisture, especially in Gold Coast humidity. A plastic barrier stops it reaching the boards.

Units and apartments

Many Gold Coast buildings set an acoustic rating for hard floors. Check your by-laws before you choose a board.
