Waterproof is the word printed on almost every box of hybrid flooring. It is true of the planks, but it helps to understand what that does and does not cover before you lay hybrid through a kitchen or laundry.
Yes, hybrid planks are waterproof because their rigid core does not absorb water or swell. The finished floor is not a sealed membrane, though: water left standing can still run through the joins and edges to the slab beneath. It suits kitchens, laundries and living areas, but not showers or wet areas.
How hybrid copes with humidity
Unlike timber and laminate, the stone-plastic core in most hybrid planks barely moves with humidity. That stability is why it suits Gold Coast homes with long humid summers and air conditioning in winter. It still needs the expansion gaps the maker specifies around walls and doorways, especially in large open-plan areas and rooms with full sun.
Where to be careful
- Bathrooms with a shower. Use tiles over a proper waterproof membrane.
- Floods and burst pipes. Planks survive, but water trapped underneath must be dried out, and the floor may need lifting.
- Slab moisture. New or damp slabs should be moisture tested before any floor goes down.
- Large glass doors in full sun. Some products need extra gaps or blinds to limit heat build-up.
Most warranties cover the planks against water damage but require installation to the maker's instructions, including gaps and underlay. A licensed installer protects that cover.
