A Gold Coast deck works hard. Strong UV, salt air near the beach and heavy summer rain all wear timber faster than in cooler places. A little regular care adds years to its life.
Sweep often, wash every few months, re-oil timber about twice a year if it gets full sun, and check boards, fixings, railings and the frame at least once a year. Near the beach, rinse salt off and watch for rusting fixings.
Every month
- Sweep leaves and dirt out of board gaps.
- Move pot plants so water doesn't sit under them.
- Wipe up spills like barbecue fat quickly.
Every 6 months
- Wash with a deck cleaner and soft brush.
- Re-oil or re-coat timber. See [deck oiling and staining](/blog/deck-oiling-staining-gold-coast).
- Rinse salt off decks near the beach.
Every year
- Check for soft, cracked or cupped boards.
- Look for popped nails, loose screws or rust.
- Shake balustrades and handrails.
- Look underneath for rot, termites or posts sitting in water.
When it's more than maintenance
Spongy boards, a wobbly railing or rot in the frame mean it's time for deck repairs or deck replacement. For a low-upkeep option, see composite decking. Our main page is decking Gold Coast.
