Hybrid, laminate and vinyl plank can all look like timber, which makes them easy to mix up. In a Gold Coast home, the difference shows up when the floor gets wet, when the humidity climbs and after a few years of sand and kids.
For most Gold Coast homes, hybrid flooring is the best all-rounder: its rigid core is waterproof, it feels solid underfoot and it costs $45 to $90 per m² supplied and installed. Laminate feels similar but can swell if water gets into the joins. Thin vinyl is fully waterproof but shows bumps in the slab and dents more easily.
| Hybrid | Laminate | Vinyl plank | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | Waterproof core | Water resistant at best; core can swell | Waterproof |
| Feel underfoot | Solid, rigid | Solid, can sound hollow | Softer, thinner |
| Over tiles | Often yes | Often yes | Needs a very flat surface |
| Best for | Whole home, kitchens, rentals | Dry living areas and bedrooms | Budget jobs on flat slabs |
Why hybrid wins in our climate
Wet feet from the pool, rain blown through sliding doors and humid summers are all hard on laminate's wood-fibre core. Hybrid's stone-plastic core does not swell, and its rigidity hides small flaws in the slab that thin vinyl would show. See our hybrid flooring Gold Coast page or hybrid flooring cost for pricing tiers.
When the others make sense
Laminate can suit dry bedrooms and studies on a tight budget. Vinyl plank suits very flat slabs where height is limited. If you want real timber, look at timber flooring instead. Our flooring Gold Coast page covers all the options we install.
