Sleeper walls are the most common way to level a sloping Gold Coast block. They go in quickly, suit most yards and come in timber or concrete. The right choice depends on height, soil, moisture and how long you want the wall to last.
Concrete sleepers last longer and won't rot or attract termites, which suits our wet, humid summers. Treated pine sleepers cost less up front but have a shorter life. Either way, good drainage behind the wall matters more than the sleeper itself. Walls over 1 m, or walls near a boundary or carrying a load, usually need engineering and approval.
Timber vs concrete sleepers
- Treated pine: lowest material cost, easy to cut, but can rot or move over time in wet clay.
- Hardwood: stronger look and life than pine, but still timber and still needs drainage.
- Concrete: longest life, no rot or termites, available in timber-look and stone-look finishes.
Why drainage is the big one
Most failed walls on the Gold Coast fail because water builds up behind them after heavy rain. A proper wall has gravel backfill, ag pipe at the base and somewhere for that water to go.
Approvals
Height, location and what sits above the wall all affect whether approval and engineering are needed. See our guide to retaining wall cost and approvals on the Gold Coast.
