Stairs and balustrades are where a lot of deck budgets grow, and where the building rules matter most.
A deck more than 1 metre above the ground below needs a balustrade at least 1 metre high, with gaps no wider than 125 mm. A set of timber stairs typically adds $1,200 to $3,500. Balustrades run $250 to $550 per linear metre in timber and $400 to $800 for glass or stainless wire.
Stair rules in plain terms
- Every step in a flight should be the same height and depth.
- Open risers need gaps small enough that a 125 mm sphere can't pass through.
- Stairs with a fall of more than 1 metre need a handrail and balustrade.
- Treads should be slip resistant, which matters around pools.

Balustrade options
- Timber: matches a timber deck and is the most affordable.
- Glass: keeps the view, popular on canal and pool decks.
- Stainless wire: open look, needs correct tension to meet the rules.
- Aluminium: low upkeep and good near salt air.
