Summer sun and storms are the two reasons most Gold Coast decks end up with a roof. Planning both together saves money and gives a better result.
A covered deck is two jobs priced together: the deck at $315 to $630 per m² for hardwood or $360 to $675 for composite, plus the roof. A roofed alfresco structure generally starts around $8,000. Most covered decks need building approval and a roof engineered for the site's wind rating.
Roof options
- Flat or skillion Colorbond: simple and affordable.
- Insulated panels: noticeably cooler underneath in summer.
- Gable: suits older homes and adds height.
- Polycarbonate sections: let light through where the deck faces south.
Why plan it together
Roof posts often land on the deck. If the deck is built first without allowing for them, footings get dug twice. Planning both means one set of footings, one approval and one builder.
Approvals
Roofed structures usually need a building approval and wind-rated engineering. We handle that through a private certifier. See our patio and pergola builders page and the pergola cost guide.
