Spotted gum grows in Queensland and New South Wales and is one of the most popular Australian hardwoods for decks. Its colour ranges from pale grey-brown to deep chocolate, with a wavy grain that gives each deck its own character.
Spotted gum is a very hard, durable Australian hardwood with a varied grey-brown to chocolate colour. A spotted gum deck on the Gold Coast falls within our hardwood range of $350 to $550 per m² supplied and installed. Like all timber decks here, it needs oiling about twice a year in full sun.
What makes spotted gum a good deck timber
- One of the hardest and most durable Australian decking timbers.
- Locally grown, which many owners prefer.
- Natural colour variation that suits coastal and modern homes.
- Often chosen in bushfire-prone areas of the hinterland, where some species and finishes are required. Your certifier confirms what your site needs.
Grades and colour
Spotted gum is sold in grades such as select and standard (or feature). Select has fewer natural features for a cleaner look, while standard and feature grades show more gum veins and knots for a rustic finish at a lower material cost.
Spotted gum vs merbau vs composite
Merbau is more uniform and red-brown; see our merbau decking guide. Composite removes oiling altogether at $450 to $700 per m² installed; see composite decking Gold Coast. For hardwood decks, see timber decking Gold Coast.
