Overview
A hardwood deck looks warm and natural, and it can be sanded back and refreshed many times. It is also usually cheaper up front than a premium composite deck. The trade-off is upkeep. Which hardwood suits your deck?
Spotted Gum is hard, durable and has a mix of light and dark tones. Merbau is a rich red-brown and is widely available, but it can bleed tannin onto paving when new. Blackbutt is a lighter, pale timber that suits modern homes. We talk through colour, board width and grade on site. The right choice depends on sun exposure, how the deck will be used and the look of your house.
The frame matters as much as the boards
Most deck failures start underneath. We check footings, bearer and joist sizes and spans, and ventilation under the deck. On coastal sites we use fixings that stand up to salt air. If the deck is raised or attached to the house, it may need engineering and building approval. We arrange this where required.
Looking after a timber deck

Is timber or composite decking better on the Gold Coast?

How long does a hardwood deck last?
A well-built hardwood deck with a sound frame and regular maintenance can last many years. Lifespan depends on the species, the frame, drainage, sun exposure and how well it is maintained.
Do I need approval for a timber deck?
It depends on the height, size, roof and whether it attaches to the house. Decks more than 1 metre above ground usually need building approval in Queensland. We confirm this during the site visit.
Can you replace my old timber deck boards and keep the frame?
