A low deck is a good way to tidy up a tired patio slab or an uneven corner of the yard. Being close to the ground brings its own problems though, mostly water and airflow.
You can deck over concrete or tiles on the Gold Coast if water can drain away and air can move under the boards. Low decks cost $315 to $630 per m² in hardwood and $360 to $675 in composite, usually at the lower end because there are no stairs or balustrades.
Decking over concrete or tiles
- The slab needs a fall so water runs off, not under the house.
- Battens sit on packers so water can pass beneath them.
- Leave ventilation gaps around the edges.
- Check the finished height against door sills and weep holes.
Floating decks on soil
A floating deck isn't fixed to the house. It sits on its own footings, which keeps it simpler for approvals in many cases. Low clearance makes ventilation even more important, and H4 treated pine or aluminium framing is used for ground contact.
Composite on low decks
Composite boards handle low, damp spots better than timber, but they still need airflow and the gaps the maker specifies. See composite decking or timber decking.
