Most decks are framed in treated pine. On the coast, around pools and on very low decks, an aluminium subframe is often the better choice.
Aluminium deck frames don't rot, don't attract termites and stay straight, which suits low decks, pool surrounds and coastal homes on the Gold Coast. They cost more than treated pine, so we price both when the site suits either.
Where aluminium makes sense
- Low decks with little airflow underneath.
- Decking over concrete or tiles.
- Pool surrounds with constant splashing.
- Beachside suburbs with salt air.
- Composite boards, which pair well with a dead-straight frame.
Aluminium vs treated pine
| Treated pine | Aluminium | |
|---|---|---|
| Rot and termites | Treated to resist | Not affected |
| Straightness over time | Can twist or shrink | Stays straight |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Low-clearance decks | Needs care | Well suited |
Fixings near the coast
Fixings and brackets matter as much as the frame. We use stainless or coated fixings rated for coastal conditions. See floating and low decks, deck footings and joists and the pool decking page.
