Aluminium and steel pergolas generally sit at the higher end of that range but cope better with coastal salt exposure than untreated timber over the long term.
Attached versus freestanding
An attached pergola connects to the house, usually off the back of a living area, and effectively extends your indoor space outward. It is generally the more cost-effective option because one side of the structure ties into the existing roofline. A freestanding pergola sits apart from the house, which is popular for poolside shade, garden dining areas or a separate zone away from the main living area, but it needs its own full frame and footings on every side, which adds cost.

Roof options and how much shade you actually get
- Open batten roof. Classic pergola look, casts dappled shade, and is often softened further with a climbing vine, but offers no rain protection.
- Shade cloth or fabric. Adjustable and relatively affordable, though fabric needs replacing every several years in strong Queensland sun.
- Polycarbonate sheeting. Lets light through while blocking most UV, and gives some rain protection, though it heats up the space more than a solid roof.
- Louvred aluminium roof. Roof blades open and close to control light and rain, giving the flexibility of an open pergola with the option of a closed roof, at a higher price point.
