Most Gold Coast decks use treated pine somewhere, usually in the frame. The real question is what goes on top.
Treated pine decking costs $180 to $360 per m² supplied and installed on the Gold Coast, and hardwood $315 to $630. Pine suits shaded or budget decks you're happy to paint or stain. Hardwood handles full sun better and looks better oiled.
| Treated pine | Hardwood | |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost per m² | $180 to $360 | $315 to $630 |
| Surface hardness | Soft, marks easily | Hard, wears well |
| In full sun | More cupping and splitting | More stable |
| Finish | Usually painted or stained | Oiled, natural grain |
The usual combination
Plenty of decks use a treated pine frame (H3 above ground, H4 or H5 in contact with soil) with hardwood or composite boards on top. You get a sound frame at a sensible price and a better surface where you walk.
Where pine makes sense
- Covered or shaded decks that don't cop afternoon sun.
- Low decks on rental properties.
- Decks you plan to paint to match the house.
