Overview

Plasterboard repair looks easy and photographs badly when it is done poorly. The difference between a patch you cannot find and a patch you can see from the doorway is edge preparation, backing, and how many coats went on before sanding. We cut damage back to a clean square, back the opening so the new piece is supported rather than floating on filler, fix and tape it, then build the set up in coats with drying time in between. The final sand is done under a light held at an angle to the wall, because that is how the defect will show up later. We also look at why the damage is there. A crack that keeps returning at the same corner is movement, not a patching problem, and a stained sheet is a water problem that will ruin the new sheet too if the source is not dealt with first.

Why patches show through paint

Three reasons, in order. The set was built in one heavy coat so it shrank and left a hollow or a ridge. The patch had no backing behind it so the new piece flexes when the wall is touched. Or the sand was done under flat lighting, so the feathered edges were never checked against the raking light that afternoon sun throws across a wall. Avoiding all three is process rather than talent. Multiple thin coats, proper backing, and checking the finish under a light held near parallel to the surface before we call it done.

Cracks that keep coming back

A hairline crack running diagonally from a door or window corner, or a joint that reopens every summer, is usually structural movement or timber movement rather than a failed set. On the Gold Coast reactive soils and seasonal moisture swings move houses more than people expect. Re-setting a moving crack just resets the clock. Where the pattern points to movement we say so, and where the underlying cause is subfloor or framing related the fix belongs there first. Set jointing over a stabilised crack lasts. Set jointing over an active one does not.

Water damaged plasterboard

Stained, sagging or soft plasterboard from a roof leak, a shower leak or a burst flexible hose has to be cut out, not painted over. Wet sheet loses strength permanently and the paper facing supports mould growth even after it dries. We cut back to dry, sound material, confirm the framing behind is dry, replace with new sheet, then set and sand. If the leak has not been resolved we will tell you what we can see, because there is no point in a new sheet going in under an active leak. How much does gyprock patching cost on the Gold Coast?

Small patch work is usually priced as a minimum call out covering the first repairs, and it is far more economical to have several patches done in the one visit than one at a time, because the drying and return visits are the same either way. We quote a fixed price after seeing photos or inspecting.

How long does a plasterboard repair take?

The work itself is quick, but the drying is not. A typical patch is fixed on the first visit, coated again once dry, then sanded on a third short visit. Rushing that sequence into one day is what makes patches visible later.

Do you paint after patching?

We leave repairs sanded and ready for paint as standard. We can also paint the repaired area or the full wall, which is usually the better result because a patch primed and rolled in isolation rarely disappears completely against aged paint.

Can you repair a hole in a wall the same day?

We can make it safe and closed the same day, but a finished, invisible repair needs drying time between coats. Where speed matters, tell us and we will plan the visits around your deadline.

My cracks keep coming back - can you stop that?

Only by dealing with what is moving. If the crack is caused by structural or subfloor movement, the repair has to follow the structural fix. We will tell you honestly which situation you have rather than reselling the same patch every year.
