Making a level outdoor area
There are two main ways to create a level area on a slope: build a deck out from the house, or cut and retain the ground to pour a slab. Decks are often quicker and cheaper on steeper ground. Retaining suits gentler slopes.
Once the floor is sorted, the roof goes over it on posts set to footings designed for the extra height.

A deck at house floor level means no steps out of the living room. Taller posts need bracing.
Retaining and slab
A low retaining wall and slab create a level pad. Drainage behind the wall is essential.
Tall posts
Posts on the low side may be several metres long. Footing size and bracing are set accordingly.
