Pool Decking Gold Coast

New pool decks and pool surrounds in hardwood timber or composite boards, built on a ventilated frame that copes with constant splash, chlorine or salt water and Gold Coast sun.

Timber deck built onto the rear of a Queensland home
Quick answer

Pool decking on the Gold Coast costs $350 to $550 per m² for hardwood timber and $450 to $700 per m² for composite, supplied and installed. The right board depends on sun exposure, how hot it gets underfoot and how much upkeep you want. The frame, drainage and fixings matter as much as the boards around a pool.

Overview

A pool deck works harder than any other deck on the property. It is splashed every day in summer, walked on with wet feet, hit by full afternoon sun and, on salt water pools, exposed to salt as well. A deck that would last fifteen years in a back garden can start to grey, cup or rust at the fixings within a few seasons beside a pool if it is not specified for it. We build pool decks and surrounds in hardwood timber and composite boards, on a properly drained and ventilated frame, with fixings chosen for the exposure. Pool fencing has to stay compliant through the whole job, so we plan the work around your existing fence or coordinate with your pool fencer.

Timber or composite around a pool?

Hardwood looks warm and stays cooler underfoot than most composite boards, but around a pool it needs oiling more often because water and sun dry it out. Composite needs almost no upkeep and will not splinter, though darker colours get hot in full sun, so lighter shades and some shade cover are worth considering. Our timber vs composite decking guide compares the two in detail.

What makes a pool deck last

Most pool decks fail from underneath. Water runs through the board gaps constantly, so the frame needs airflow, falls away from the pool shell and timber treated for the exposure. Fixings should be stainless steel, because galvanised screws near chlorine and salt corrode and stain the boards. Board gaps are set so water drains freely and leaves and grit do not pack in.

Pool fencing and approvals

Queensland pool safety laws apply throughout the build. A deck cannot create a climbable spot near the pool fence or reduce its height. Low decks around a pool are often exempt from building approval, but raised decks, decks near boundaries and anything that changes the pool barrier usually need a certifier. Our guide to council approval for decks in Queensland explains when.

Pricing your pool deck

We measure on site and quote a fixed price in writing. Board choice, deck height, access to the backyard and any steps or platforms decide where the job sits in the range. See our decking cost page for what moves the price, or read our pool decking materials guide for more on board choice.

Our process

  1. 1

    Site inspection

We attend the property, inspect the actual condition rather than working from photos alone, and talk through what you want the finished result to be. Bring any reports, strata approvals or insurance paperwork you already have.

  2. 2

    Written fixed-price quote

You receive an itemised quote covering labour, materials, rubbish removal and any engineering or certification required. Where the full extent of damage can only be confirmed once linings or decking boards come off, we say so up front and quote the investigative stage separately rather than hiding it in an allowance.

  3. 3

    Approvals and scheduling

Where certification, an engineer's design or body corporate approval is needed, we organise it and book the works into a dated program so you know which days we are on site.

  4. 4

    Carry out the works

Protected floors, dust control, tidy site each afternoon and photo updates as we go. Occupied homes, tenanted properties and trading businesses are all worked around rather than shut down where possible.

  5. 5

    Handover

Final walkthrough, defect check, invoice and any documentation - engineering certificates, Form 16s, product warranties - handed over with the job.

Frequently asked questions

How much does pool decking cost on the Gold Coast?

Hardwood timber pool decking is $350 to $550 per m² and composite is $450 to $700 per m², supplied and installed. Steps, platforms and difficult access add to the total.

What is the best decking around a pool?

Composite is the low-maintenance choice and will not splinter. Hardwood stays cooler underfoot and can be sanded back. Either works if the frame drains well and the fixings are stainless.

Does composite decking get hot around a pool?

Darker composite boards can get hot in full summer sun. Lighter colours, newer cooler-running boards and some shade over the deck help.

Do I need approval for a pool deck?

Low decks are often exempt, but height, boundary distance and any change to the pool barrier can trigger approval. We check this when we quote.

Can you replace an old timber pool deck?

Yes. We check the frame first. If it is sound we may only replace boards and fixings; if not, we rebuild it. See our deck replacement page.
