A hardwood deck on the Gold Coast can look tired within a single summer if it is left alone. Strong UV, salt air and heavy rain dry the timber out fast. The good news is that regular oiling is simple and keeps the boards sound for years.
Exposed hardwood decks on the Gold Coast usually need oiling about twice a year, while covered or shaded decks can go 12 to 18 months. Penetrating decking oils suit most decks. If water no longer beads on the surface or the boards have turned grey, it is due.
Oil, stain or paint?
- Penetrating oil. Soaks into the timber and is easy to re-coat without sanding back. The usual choice for hardwood decks.
- Tinted oil or stain. Adds colour and some UV protection. Darker tints hide weathering but can fade unevenly.
- Film-forming coatings and paint. Look sharp at first but tend to peel on horizontal decks in our climate, and stripping them later is hard work.
How to tell your deck is due
Signs it needs oiling
- Water soaks in instead of beading
- Boards have gone silver-grey
- Fine surface cracks or splinters are appearing
- Black spots of mould in shaded areas
When oiling is not enough
If boards are cupped, soft, split along their length or the nails keep lifting, oil will not fix it. Those are signs of moisture getting into the frame or failing fixings. Our article on signs a timber deck needs replacing explains what to look for, and our deck repairs team can sand, re-oil and replace damaged boards.
If you are re-decking anyway, composite boards remove the oiling cycle altogether. Compare the options on our [composite decking](/composite-decking) and [timber decking](/timber-decking-gold-coast) pages.
