A deck facing a neighbour's window or a strong afternoon breeze often goes unused. A well-placed screen fixes both. It needs to be planned with the deck, because screens catch wind and put real load on posts and footings.

Screen materials

• Timber battens match a timber deck and let some breeze through.
• Aluminium slats are light, low upkeep and come in many colours.
• Composite screening can match composite decking from the same range.
• Glass panels block wind while keeping the view, but are heavier and cost more.

Gaps and airflow

A solid screen blocks the most wind but can create swirling gusts on the other side. Slats with small gaps soften the wind instead of stopping it dead, and still give good privacy. Gaps of 10 to 20 mm are a common balance.

Structure

Screen posts must be fixed into the deck frame or their own footings, not just screwed to a board. Taller screens need stronger posts and deeper footings. On coastal sites we use stainless or coated fixings.

Height and approval

Screens over certain heights, or close to a boundary, can need approval. Rules also apply where a screen forms part of a pool barrier. We check the height and position against what is allowed before finalising the design.

Prices and options

As a general guide, timber decking runs roughly $350 to $550 per m² and composite $450 to $700 per m² supplied and installed, depending on height, access, framing and finishes. Screens are priced by length and material. We also offer install only. See timber decking and deck builders.
