Hardwoods such as Merbau, Spotted Gum and Blackbutt, or composite boards from Ekodeck and Ezy Decking. Supply and install, or install only if you are supplying the boards.
On replacement jobs we check the existing structure before quoting. Framing is only reused when its condition and size suit the new deck.

Height changes everything
A deck that sits 3 or 4 m above the ground is a serious structure. Posts are longer and must be braced so the deck does not sway. Footings need to suit the soil and the slope. Building approval and engineering are almost always required.
Posts and bracing
Tall posts are usually steel or large-section hardwood, set into concrete footings with stirrups so the post base stays dry. Cross bracing or knee bracing between posts and bearers stiffens the frame. A deck that feels bouncy or moves when people walk on it is under-braced.
Footings on a slope
On a steep fall, the downhill footings often need to be deeper. We look at access for digging and pouring concrete, which may need a small machine or hand work.
Balustrades
At this height, the balustrade is a safety item, not a feature. It must be at least 1 m high and meet the rules on gaps and climbing. Glass gives a view but is heavy. Stainless wire, aluminium and timber are common alternatives.
Under the deck
- Batten screening around the base hides the posts and makes storage space.
- A drained surface under the deck keeps it dry for stored items.
- Some people add a second, lower deck or patio underneath.

As a general guide, timber decking runs roughly $350 to $550 per m² and composite $450 to $700 per m² supplied and installed, depending on height, access, framing and finishes.
