Alongside home decks, we take on decking for managed and commercial properties: outdoor customer areas for cafes and retail, office break-out decks, body corporate common areas, and replacement decks on investment properties for landlords and property managers. Commercial work can be timber or composite, and is scoped and quoted the same way: measure, assess what is there, then a fixed written price.

Before anything is built

We visit, measure, check the levels and talk about how you will use the deck. We note where services might run underground, such as stormwater, sewer and power, and check for any easements on the block. Then you get a written quote with the size, frame, board, fixings and any extras such as steps or a balustrade listed out.

If the deck needs approval because of its height, size or a roof over it, the certifier and engineer are arranged before work starts.

Day one: set-out and footings

The deck outline is set out with string lines and the post positions are marked. Holes are dug to the required depth, and concrete footings are poured with galvanised stirrups or post brackets set into them. We let the concrete cure before loading it.

Bearers and joists

Bearers sit on the posts or stirrups, and joists run across the bearers at the spacing your board needs. The frame is checked for level and square at every stage. If the deck is attached to the house, a ledger is fixed to the house frame and flashed so water cannot get behind it. We seal cut ends of treated timber and add joist tape on top where it helps the frame last.

Laying the boards

Boards are laid with even gaps for drainage and airflow. Hardwood is screwed down with stainless screws, pre-drilled near the ends to stop splitting. Composite is fixed with the manufacturer's hidden clips. Joins are planned so they fall in neat lines. Edges are finished with a picture-frame board or trimmed straight, then fascia boards go on to cover the frame.

Steps, rails and clean-up

Steps and any balustrade are built last. We clean up offcuts, remove waste and walk the deck with you. For hardwood, we talk about when to oil it, since new hardwood usually needs a few weeks to weather before the first coat. For composite, we explain how to clean it.

How long it takes

A straightforward ground-level deck of 20 to 30 m² usually takes about a week on site, depending on weather and how long concrete needs to cure. Larger, raised or multi-level decks take longer.

Materials and pricing

We build with treated pine, hardwood such as spotted gum and blackbutt, and composite from Ekodeck and Ezy Decking. As a general guide, timber decking runs roughly $350 to $550 per m² and composite $450 to $700 per m² supplied and installed, depending on height, access, framing and finishes.
